Why the Open Meetings Act Matters
The OMA guarantees the public’s right to access government meetings. It’s more than a legal requirement—it’s a safeguard that strengthens confidence in election integrity. Read how election board compliance ensures accountability.
Taking Action for Statewide Compliance
To protect this right, Secure the Vote Maryland filed 11 formal complaints with the Maryland Attorney General on March 24, 2025, citing OMA violations. Another 18 OMA violation formal complaints were filed on May 6th, 2025. As of 5.12.25 three formal violations of OMA were issued by the Maryland Attorney General. In response, we’ve asked the State Board of Elections:
- What mechanisms enforce OMA compliance at the local level?
- Do election directors receive performance-based feedback?
- What steps are being taken to ensure uniform transparency standards?
Legislative Reform Underway
Senator Cheryl Kagan and Delegate Marc Korman have proposed legislation to strengthen OMA enforcement statewide. The bill would:
- Expand public access to decision-making
- Require standardized posting of meetings and minutes
- Impose penalties for violations
We fully support this effort to restore transparency and trust in our election system.
Public Bodies, Public Responsibility
Election boards in all 23 counties and Baltimore City are public entities funded by taxpayers. They are not exempt from scrutiny and must operate openly and lawfully. Noncompliance with the OMA weakens public confidence. No publicly funded agency should be allowed to disregard the law.
